About

Ronald Louis Miller (1946-2025) impacted SJJ greatly as a math teacher, coach, mentor, colleague, and friend, and will be forever remembered. Ron had been part of the St. John’s Jesuit faculty and staff for more than fifty years.

Ron started at SJJ as a first year math teacher in the fall of 1968. Although he graduated from St. Francis de Sales in 1964, he quickly embraced and championed all that was blue and gold. He taught math to thousands of students and worked with others in several capacities. It brought Ron great joy to teach generations of the same family.

Ron was a colleague at heart. The camaraderie of the Titan faculty and staff represented a deep sense of family. In his own words, Ron wrote about his experience in interdisciplinary teaching, among other highlights, for an issue of Titan Topics. He wrote, “I was very fortunate to team-teach with two of our finest science teachers, Dave Simmons and Scott Zura. The three of us developed the [Physics/Analysis] course, learned from each other, and became better teachers and good friends.”

Ron was a lifetime fan of hockey and the Detroit Red Wings. He helped establish the SJJ hockey program in the early 1970’s. His classroom was the only exception to the “red rule” as he painted it red and white with a picture of the arena, a Wings logo, and the word “Hockeytown.” Aside from being an assistant hockey coach, he was also the head baseball coach. In fact, he was an avid fan of every Titan sport, every season.

Ron often shared that his most rewarding experience at St. John’s was leading the senior Kairos retreats. He worked closely with Fr. Tom Pipp, SJ, Greg Richard, and others for more than thirty years. Grateful for all that he had the opportunity to experience in his career, upon the milestone of his 50th anniversary at SJJ he wrote, “I am so proud to be a part of the SJJ family and the lives of the approximately 6,000 young men I taught. Thanks to those of you who have helped me have a wonderful life, and thanks to so many who have been a part of my wonderful life.”

May he rest in peace.
